Commonwealth Bank Of Australia Phony Phishing Email

This is a phishing email that I’ve just received, one that is a lot closer to home as it is directed at Aussies. The link at the end of the email, which I have removed, directs you to a page that looks almost identical to the actual Commonwealth Bank’s log in page. Do not be fooled as it’s a con. Banks do not send out this sort of email. If you have any concern whatsoever, ring the bank, but whatever you do, do not give any details online via that email! Delete it immediately!

Dear Commonwealth Bank of Australia customer,

During our regularly scheduled account maintenance and verification procedures, we have detected a slight error in your billing information.

This might be due to either of the following reasons:

1. A recent change in your personal information ( i.e.change of address).
2. Submiting invalid information during the initial sign up process.
3. An inability to accurately verify your selected option of payment due to an internal error within our processors.

Please update and verify your information by folowing this link:

http://www.commbankupdate-au.com

If your account information is not updated within 48 hours then your ability to access your account will become restricted.

Thank you

Remember that this email is absolute bullshit and under no circumstance should you do what it says.

Hey Derek, you were quick off the mark mate. I’ve only just posted this and there you are commenting on it. I think it’s important to post this sort of articles as many people don’t bother contacting their banks, but they do search the Internet to see whether certain emails are legit. This post is aimed at them.

Thanks for taking the time to comment and for providing those links.

LOL! I live and breathe Twitter. As soon as I saw a tweet about the blog entry I had to check it out 🙂

BTW – another excellent resource, which I keep an eye on, is http://www.fraudwatchinternational.com/phishing . Near- real-time visibility of member-reported phishing emails.

      Cheers

I got the email with the phone number. Rang it up out of interest. It’s very clever but the Amarican accent is the giveaway.

You would have thought with all that effort (technology, spem setup etc) they’d have worked on an Aussie accent!
